About Levi's Books and Taxes

Matthew C Cox

This page has everything you want to know (and maybe some stuff you don't want to know) about our company and its owner.

Who is Levi?

"Levi" is Matthew C Cox, our company's owner.

If his name is Matthew, why is the company called Levi’s?

Our owner sees things with a creative bend. His parents named him after the author of the first book in the New Testament of the Bible, Matthew. Matthew was a tax collector and a disciple of Jesus. The author of the Book of Mark calls the disciple who was a tax collector “Levi” in his book.

So, when Matt decided to do open his accounting practice, he was looking for a clever name and his wife suggested “Levi's Books and Taxes.” (Yes, she sees things with a creative bend too.)

What qualifies Matt to be an accountant?

He graduated from Fieldale-Collinsville High School (Collinsville, Virginia) in 1979 (the school recently merged with Bassett High School) and from there, he went to East Carolina University where he graduated in 1983 with a degree in Music Education.

How does a degree in Music Education qualify him?

There’s two ways:

  1. He approaches music mathematically. (Don’t ask him about it unless you really want to know. He can talk about this for hours!)
  2. He used Financial Aid Programs to get through college. This required him to do his taxes, his parents' taxes, and complete all types of paperwork. He did all the work himself and discovered he has a gift for completing government paperwork.

So, he graduated with a degree in Music Education and started an accounting practice?

Not exactly. He taught private music lessons for ten years while he helped a few friends with bookkeeping and taxes. One day, he decided to start charging for the services. Before he knew it, he had more bookkeeping and tax work than he could do and still teach music lessons.

He decided to give up the music and work from his home so he could spend more time around his family and community. This also makes it possible for him to develop teachings to help bring Peace to the world. (You may learn more about this at Peace of Mind Training Institute.)

Does he really have more than twenty years of business experience in businesses other than accounting?

Yes, he does. (We think he has attention deficit disorder.) His experience includes storefront businesses, tax-exempt organizations, and internet businesses. His way of looking at accounting, taxes, and marketing comes from actual business experience. He sees this business as a way to teach others about how to experience financial freedom.

He is currently a partner in several other businesses. Click here to go to the bottom of this page and learn about Matt's other businesses.

What do you mean about using business as a way to teach others?

That’s an entire subject by itself. Let’s just say, he believes finances have a spiritual connection. He talks about this in the Peace of Mind Training Institute Financial Peace of Mind Seminars.

One more question about this. You said this is spiritual. Does that mean he has a philosophy that ties his work together?

YES – it permeates everything his company does. But, like I said before, he talks about this in the Peace of Mind Training Institute Financial Peace of Mind Seminars.

Does this mean Matt must work by himself?

No, he now has a partner and he also collaborates with others to provide services. However, he reviews the work to make sure it is congruent with his philosophy.

I have one more question. Does the logo mean anything?

It has a multitude of obvious and not-so-obvious meanings.

  • It is a mathematical less than symbol.
  • It is an abstract treble clef.
  • It is a musical crescendo.

It is a mix of art and science, music and math, creativity and logic.

It represents a creative approach to finances that is built upon logic and fundamentals.

It is Levi's Books and Taxes.

Does Matt stay up-to-date with current tax laws?

Absolutely!
